Storing Digital Data on Audio Tape
نویسندگان
چکیده
We have implemented a modem for digital storage onto standard audio tape. The primary goal of this project was to get a prototype system to function with very low probability of bit error. The prototype system is \soft" in that it is all done within Ptolemy except D/A and A/D conversion and, of course, recording is done on a cassette deck. The transmitter takes an input bit stream and modulates raised cosine pulses for di erentially encoded 4-QAM passband transmission at 256 baud, where di erential encoding is used to overcome carrier phase ambiguity. Time-compression distortion of the channel necessitates both timing and carrier recovery as will be explained. Therefore, timing recovery, carrier recovery, and adaptive fractionally spaced equalizer were all crucial subsystems of the of the receiver.

Traditionally, digital tape has been used by applications accessing the tape mostly sequentially. Applications having a random access pattern to the data are much better off storing the data on magnetic disks. Today we see new application areas, where the need for huge amounts of digital storage does not make it cost-effective to store all the data on magnetic disk. One example of such an appli...
متن کاملA survey on digital data hiding schemes: principals, algorithms, and applications
This paper investigates digital data hiding schemes. The concept of information hiding will be explained at first, and its traits, requirements, and applications will be described subsequently. In order to design a digital data hiding system, one should first become familiar with the concepts and criteria of information hiding. Having knowledge about the host signal, which may be audio, image, ...

Specimens of early computer systems stop working every day. It is necessary to prepare ourselves for the upcoming situation of having storage media and no working systems to read data from these carriers. With storage media residing in archives for already obsolete systems it is necessary to extract the data from these media before it can be migrated for long term preservation. One storage medi...

Not long ago Digital Audio Tapes (DATs) were a popular medium for professional digital recording. The Smithsonian Institution Archives holds almost 2,000 DATs in its accessions but until recently lacked equipment to retrieve the rich collections of music, interviews, and programs from across the Institution. Very few archives have conducted in-house transfers of DATs. The Smithsonian Institutio...

Both magnetic wire and acetate-based magnetic tape were used in the audio industry. Welsh and Lukoff [lj describe the early use of metal tape for digital magnetic recording. Acetate-based tape was used for digital recording by Raytheon at a relatively low tape velocity, as reported by Bloch [2]. At IBM it was decided to pursue an acetate-based plastic magnetic tape for computer input,‘ output b...
